The first meeting of the Working Group for Drafting the Draft Sector Strategy of the Rule of Law is held

Prishtina, 16 July 2020 - Last week the Ministry of Justice organized the first meeting of the Working Group for Drafting the Draft Sector Strategy of the Rule of Law.

This reform initiative of the Ministry of Justice, in cooperation with the Kosovo Prosecutorial Council (KPC), the Kosovo Judicial Council (KJC), and key actors in the sector, aims to ensure a comprehensive and consolidated vision of the rule of law, to increase citizens' trust in the justice system, accelerate economic development and bring Kosovo closer to the European Union.

After the approval by the Steering Committee for the recommendations from the second phase of this process and the agreement to start drafting the Strategy, the purpose of this meeting was to open the third and final phase of the Functional Review process of the Rule of Law Sector. The Secretary General of the Ministry of Justice, Qemajl Marmullakaj, as the chair of the Working Group to coordinate and lead this process presented the short summary of the process with the findings and recommendations from the second phase.

The Chairman of the KPC, Bahri Hyseni, who in this meeting participated through the online platform Zoom, said that the measures which aim to increase the accountability and efficiency of the prosecutorial system, to advance the professionalism of prosecutors and their support staff and to increase the integrity and accountability, should be supported and be an integral part of the Strategy resulting from the Review.

The Working Group for Drafting the Draft Sectorial Strategy of the  Rule of Law, chaired by the Ministry of Justice, consists of representatives of the KJC, KPC, the Office of the Prime Minister, the Ministry of Internal Affairs, the Ministry of Finance, the Office of the President and the Faculty Law of the University of Prishtina. In addition to members of the Working Group, the meeting was attended by representatives of international donors, including the US Embassy, the EU Office, the British Embassy and USAID.

The members of the Working Group also agreed on further steps regarding the Draft Sectorial Strategy of the  Rule of Law and the finalization of the Functional Review process.
