Advancing the mediation system is a priority of the justice system

Pristina, 14 November 2019- A roundtable entitled “Advancing the Mediation system in Kosovo” was held, attended by chief prosecutors and presidents of Kosovo courts. This roundtable was supported by UNDP through the project “Representing Access to Justice and Rule of Law Reform in Kosovo” and funded by Norwegian Embassy in Kosovo.

The Deputy Chairman of the Kosovo Prosecutorial Council (KPC), Arben Ismajli spoke at this roundtable, who in front of the participants said that the mediation as an extrajudicial activity is a good opportunity to reduce cases in the prosecutions and courts of Kosovo.

Also, the deputy chairman Ismajli spoke about the actions taken by the Kosovo Prosecutorial Council regarding the better functioning of mediation in prosecutions, focusing on the work done in drafting bylaws drafted by the KPC, which regulate the field of mediation.

Whereas, the prosecutor in the Office of the Chief State Prosecutor, Besim Kelmendi, talked about the good opportunities that mediation brings to the justice system, but also the challenges of its implementation.

Prosecutor Kelmendi further presented the findings on the challenges of implementing mediation in practice, in meetings with administrators and mediation clerks of the prosecution offices and courts. 

UNDP project manager for strengthening the rule of law, Ardian Latifaj spoke about the workshops and roundtables organized to support the implementation of mediation.
