Prosecution offices treat cases of domestic violence with priority

Pristina, 4 December 2019 - The Head of the Kosovo Prosecutorial Council (KPC), Bahri Hyseni, participated in the presentation of the one-year work of the database on the identification of cases of domestic violence, organized by the Office of the National Coordinator on Protection from Domestic Violence in collaboration with UN Women.

On this occasion, Chairman Hyseni spoke to the participants about the work and commitment of the prosecutorial system against domestic violence. “In order to increase the efficiency in dealing with cases of domestic violence in the prosecution of these cases, The Kosovo Prosecutorial Council, on the basis of the Law on Prosecutorial Council and Strategic Plan of the Prosecutorial Council, on 29 May 2017 adopted the Standard Procedures actions to increase efficiency in dealing with domestic violence cases. This efficiency is intended to be achieved through the appointment of special prosecutors to handle domestic violence cases”, said Mr. Hyseni.

Further, the Chairman of the KPC stated that each Basic Prosecutor has appointed a responsible prosecutor or coordinator to handle cases of domestic violence in accordance with the requirements stemming from the National Strategy of the Republic of Kosovo for Protection against Domestic Violence and Action Plan for 2016-2020. He added that prosecutors assigned to deal with domestic violence handle all cases, ensure they are prioritized, and serve to unify different law enforcement partners and practices and prosecutions in domestic violence cases.

During his speech, Chairman Hyseni also presented the number of domestic violence cases handled by prosecutors during the period January-September 2019, saying that all these cases are treated with priority. He said that during the period January-September 2019, Kosovo Prosecutor's Offices have received 1317 cases of domestic violence, with 1786 persons and have solved 1038 cases, with 1483 persons, for adult perpetrators, or 78.8% of the received cases. In this regard, 1,112 indictments have been filed.

At the end of his speech, KPC Chairman Bahri Hyseni said that for the prosecutorial system, the functioning of this database implies an additional step in increasing efficiency in dealing with cases of domestic violence. Therefore, according to him, state prosecutors will be maximally committed to fulfill all their duties and obligations for its full functioning.
